My Merdeka post, with a twist

First of all, I would like to wish you all Selamat Hari Merdeka! Let us cherish this gift of freedom rightfully earned by our forefathers, may we all continue to press on our efforts on making our country a better place.

Every year when August 31st comes around, one of the most popular questions being asked by the media to the general public would surely be…

What does 'Merdeka' mean to you?

Being independent means that we are free. We are the rulers of our own land. In a way, it is almost like when you finally managed to buy off the plot of land you once leased from someone else, hence you are now forever free to do whatever you want on the land. Yeay, you now no longer need to pay the rent for that plot of land, all the income of the land goes directly to you.

Most important of all, since you are now the one calling the shots, you get to make the decisions that will be of benefit to your own self. If say, after doing much research you learnt that the land is most suitable for growing palm oil whereas back then, the previous landlord insisted on you growing coconut plants just because he wanted to have more coconut milk to be sold, you are now able to change all that and grow palm oil instead. (For the sake of illustration only, surely coconut plants and palm oil requires different soil structures.)

So you see, you are not only the decision maker, but you now have the ability to actually make the right decisions; decisions that would hopefully make you better off than you previously were.

Sounds all nice and happy now, don’t it? Sadly though, the biggest problem has yet to dawn upon us all. It is one thing to be able to wield a big sword, but how you choose to use it is another. Having the power to make your own choices on what is best for the country is itself a struggle, but then again, how do you know what is actually the ‘right’ choice to be made?

Ironic, don’t you think?
Previously when someone else is controlling you, you know for a fact that their actions are not for your best interests. You thought that as soon as you managed to flip things around, things would be better. Unfortunately, you still ended up far from making the right calls. Puzzling, no?

I leave the rest to you…….
